John Godwin was born in the United Kingdom in 1928 and respectively and studied architecture at the Architectural Association School in London.

He came to Nigeria in 1954 and started his own practice because he felt strongly that any development of architecture by him should be domiciled in a country of its origin. he has remained in the country of his adoption where his practice grew to cover most regions with many buildings to his credit.
